How do I compare?

Net worth varies enormously by age — a 30-year-old and a 60-year-old at the same percentile hold very different amounts, because the older household has had decades longer to save, invest, and compound. Comparing within your own age group is far more meaningful than against the population as a whole.

Percentiles are a useful gut-check, but they are a single moment in time. What matters more is your own trajectory: a steadily rising net worth will carry you up the rankings year after year, whatever percentile you start from.
